Watershed Conservation

We all live downstream from somewhere and we all rely on watersheds for both the quality and quantity of our water. Preserving forests helps to maintain the ecological filter mechanisms essential for providing us with clean water. Forests also stimulate rainfall thereby ensuring our water supply and reducing instances of drought and desertification.

It is estimated that more than 40% of the world’s watersheds are under stress (source: WWF).

Efficient watersheds provide significant economic and environmental benefits by reducing the need for dams and water from alternative sources such as ground water or expensive desalination plants, as well as helping to prevent damage from floods and erosion.

As a fundamental resource necessary for life, water and the role forests play in watershed conservation, is as important as their widely recognized role in providing oxygen to breathe.
