Touchwood’s Plantation in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an island of 65,610 square kilometers located in the Indian Ocean 31 kilometers off the southeast tip of India. The island has a population of over 20 million people. Most of the land is flat and rolling with mountains in the south-central region exceeding 2,000 meters. The climate is tropical, hot and humid with “wet” and “dry” zones. Average temperatures range from 28 to 30 degrees Celsius with average rainfall from 1,500 to over 2,000mm per year.
The Island was once almost entirely covered with forest demonstrating the excellent growing conditions which exist. Now, with only 30% of forests remaining due to logging, plantations are rapidly expanding as a sustainable source of forestry to preserve the remaining precious rainforests.
There are currently 22 plantations operated by Touchwood Investments Limited (TIL) distributed throughout the southwestern “wet” zone where conditions are ideal for growing mahogany, teak, sandalwood and vanilla.
