Collaborative Research Projects
Touchwood continues to engage partners from academia and industry in collaborative research projects to improve the performance of our plantations and maintain our leading edge knowledge and expertise. Some examples of our activities:
2005 - 2007: Agarwood Inoculation Trials, Prachantakham Research Site, Prachin Buri, Thailand with Dr. Robert Blanchette and Mr. Joel Jurgens from the University of Minnesota , USA
This project’s objective was to obtain Agarwood yield data by trialing various methods of inoculation to determine the most productive method for the A. crassna species planted in Thailand. The project was conducted over 2 years with excellent results. The Agarwood produced exceeded expectations in both quantity and quality produced.
2007: Fertiliser Trial, Khao Por Plantation, Prachin Buri, Thailand with Dr. Narong Chinabut from Wangkanai Corp., Ltd., Thailand
Touchwood worked with a team led by Dr. Narong from the Wangkanai Group, Thailand’s largest sugar producer, to trial an organic fertiliser produced from the waste byproduct of the sugar refining process. After a 6 month trial the results were impressive resulting in Wangkanai’s fertiliser being used across Touchwood’s plantation in Thailand. The result is a positive for both the trees and the environment. Wangkanai are able to tailor the fertiliser components specifically for Agarwood.
2008-2009: Timber Bamboo Product Development, Prachin Buri, Thailand with Dr. Boonwong from Kasetsart University, Thailand
Touchwood’s latest product, the fast growing Timber Bamboo, has been selected after consultation with experts at the Forestry Faculty of Kasetsart University, Thailand’s premier forestry faculty. With over 1,200 species of bamboo in Asia the expertise of Kasetsart University has been invaluable in assessing the growth and commercial potential of the species available and to ensure the species selected is suitable for managed forestry. Kasetsart continues to provide recommendations for all aspects of plantations operations from planting through to harvesting.
